Who Sunk Battleship? The Critics, That’s Who!

In the immortal words of Hasbro’s naval combat game, “You sunk my Battleship!” Well, you didn’t sink it but the majority of critics did. The consensus seems to be to hold out for the DVD. At $12 for a movie ticket (double that if you add popcorn and a drink) compared to $1.50 for a blue-ray at Redbox, I’ll take their advice.

The cast alone, Liam Neeson aside, should tell you this is a clunker. Based on what I’ve read, I don’t even think that Tom Cruise could have saved this one. Critics think it is a really, really bad copy-cat of Transformers but with big boats. I feel the need to share my favorite bad review quotes:

“Battleship is a board game for children, so it stands to reason a film adaptation would also be aimed at kids. But did they have to gear it to really dumb kids?” – Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald

“The worst humans-fighting-aliens movie I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of humans-fighting-aliens movies.” – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News

“Misguided in the extreme. A scene in which Kitsch and co aim blindly for the broadest of targets – and miss by miles – proves painfully apt.” – Matt Glasy, Total Film

“Battleship has the IQ of a rutabaga and doesn’t require much more intelligence than that to watch. Despite spending copious amounts of time with back story and so-called character development, it’s really all about the explosions.” – James Bernardinelli, ReelViews

“What’s the word on the film debut of Rihanna, playing a sass-mouthed petty officer? Dreadful (ella, ella).” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

That last one is my favorite, ella, ella. Just when I thought nothing could be more dreadful than that Rihanna song she goes and makes a movie, “Boom!”

The trailer seems to have the best parts of the movie.

It wasn’t a total sinker. Some people liked it. Mike Ryan from the Huffington Post loved it and professed it in a love letter to Battleship. If you saw it, leave us a comment with your own critique.

Fairy Festivals Create a World of Enchantment

Fairy Festivals create a world of enchantment for people who believe in the power of spirit. Fairies – these mystical little beings – are portrayed as whimsical and mystical as well as mischievous and vindictive. Everyone can identify with these personality traits at one time or another. Enjoying a fairy festival however, comes down to letting your hair down and giving in-to fantasy.

You don’t want to go to a fairy festival looking like a human so a fairy costume is a must.

The next fairy festival is happening now in Maryland. To give you an idea of what its all about, here is an excerpt from their website:

“The Maryland Faerie Festival celebrates the Faeries.  We provide an atmosphere and entertainment inspired by Faerie folklore and literature, and of course, by the Faeries themselves!  Yes, we believe in Faeries!  Through the Faerie heritage, we encourage love, cooperation, peace, harmony and respect for all beings, along with a pinch of mischief!  The Maryland Faerie Festival, as a 501c3 organization provides educational outreach opportunities for groups promoting diligent stewardship of Nature and sponsor artists, merchants and entertainment informed by the Faerie tradition.”

To view a complete list of registered Faerie Gatherings in your area check out the festival page on Faerie Magazine.

Why Avenger Halloween Costumes are Better Than the Hollywood Versions

With the new action movie, The Avengers coming out, there has been a lot of talk about the potential blockbuster. Now that the movie has wrapped and people are buzzing about the film and the actors are opening up about the grueling conditions during filming. Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth were among the actors that also include Robert Downy, Jr and Tom Hiddleston who shared their thoughts about their Avengers costumes, namely how uncomfortable they were to wear. Its a good thing that The Avengers Halloween costumes are far more comfortable. Just listen to this:

Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow said her costume was made of skin tight latex. For a seamless look, she wore no underwear. To make matters worse, the movie was shot in the blazing hot New Mexico desert. OK – black latex, not underwear, oppressive heat? Scarlett must have been one hot mess. In fact, the costume was so uncomfortable that she broke out with a horrible skin condition.

Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, said his costume was so hot and heavy that it required its own min air conditioner. When you buy a Theatrical Quality Thor Costume for Halloween, you can guarantee it will look amazing and it won’t need its own HVAC system.

The Avengers costumes at Costume Discounters are based on the ones from the movie but they are made with materials that are comfortable in any weather. They’re a lot more affordable too.

Trek Trax Atlanta Draws Star Trek Fans That are Out of This World

Trek Trax is considered a small convention by sci-fi convention standards but that didn’t stop last week’s attendees from loving every minute of it. Fans in Star Trek costumes were plentiful. Supanova is the Comic-Con from Down Under

Supanova is a pop culture festival held annually in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sidney, Australia. It is a fan convention similar to Comic Con here in the US. It is jam packed with celebrity appearances and features many genres from anime to sci-fi to steampunk and everything in between. You can find a mix of fans dressed at superheroes, aliens, time travelers and cartoon characters.  As a shout-out to our loyal Aussie customers, we'd like to share some photos of the odd mix of costumes and characters you will find at Supanova Pop Culture Expo.

Best Batman costume

Worst (not even sure what):

Best alien costume (take your pick):

Oddest Couple - Sleeping Beauty and Captain Jack Sparrow

Cosplay - Is this best or worst, you decide:

Just like Comic-Con, Supanova offers an eclectic group of people who are fans from all costume genres. Plus, the star appearances are from shows that span generations. A few examples are Edward James Olmos from Battlestar Galactica, Hayden Panettiere from Heroes and Peter Facinelli from Twilight.  Where are the stars of Galaxy Quest when you need them?

The Three Stooges Then and Now

It has been a long time in the making but the Three Stooges movie is finally here! Most Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers grew up watching Mo, Larry and Curly every Sunday morning on TV. We also watched the Marx Brothers, Abbot and Costello, Laurel & Hardy and The Bowery Boys. Those old black and white comedies were great but the Stooges were the best.  These are pretty tough shoes to fill so how will the new Three Stooges compare with the originals?

Let’s take a look. Here are the original Three Stooges – Moe Howard, Curly Howard and Larry Fine. Keep in mind that Curly replaced brother Shemp who left the group for a solo career.

Now we can see the stars of today who are portraying each of these characters. We’ve got Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, Sean Hayes as Larry and Will Sasso as Curly.

They may not be perfect but it could have been much worse. Look who was originally slated to play the slapstick trio. You’d be better off wearing a Three Stooges Mask.

So the guy starring in the new movie have the looks but do they have the comic genius to imitate the masters of physical comedy?

When the real guys do it, nothing compares. They are just hilarious.

I for one cannot wait to see this movie. Lord knows we could use a good laugh. When you see it, drop us a note to tell us what you think.

Hunger Games Costumes For Halloween – Create your Look

For anyone who has read The Hungers Games, you know that the costumes, as described by Suzanne Collins, do not match the costume designers’ vision as seen in the movie.  You too can use a bit of creative license to create your own version of Katniss Everdeen’s Girl on Fire costumes.

Katniss was a poor girl from a coal mining region. She needed a costume that would make her memorable. Cinna, her stylist chose to translate coal into fire and make her the “Girl of Fire.” The book describes her costumes as a black unitard with a cape made of “fluttering streams of orange, yellow and red.” The costume from the movie resembled a pleather catsuit with an almost lizard-skin appearance that spewed heatless flames. See how the two compare:

Her Girl on Fire interview dress was described in the book as being encrusted in gems to give the illusion of flames but the movie costume is nothing more that a pretty red prom dress with those same heatless flames. Apparently, you need wind to activate the flames. It seems so contrived, especially to people who wanted the movie to be true to the book.

You can use a variety of costume pieces to create the Katniss Everdeen Hunger Games Girls on Fire costume. All you need is a black catsuit and a red cape like the ones we show below. Then, take a quick trip to the craft store for a yard of red, orange and yellow chiffon, or similar fabric that you can cut into flame-like strips. Sew or pint them to the cape for a fantastic flame effect:

To make the costume look even more like Katniss, check out this how-to for creating Katniss’ look and hairstyle.

Passions Plays Celebrate the True Meaning of Easter

While so many people enjoy the secular celebrations of Easter like coloring Easter Eggs and having the Easter Bunny deliver baskets of treats, most Christians celebrate Easter for its intended purpose – to rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Regardless of all the secular enjoyment, Easter is, first and foremost, a religious observance. For churches of all Christian faiths, passion plays, in one form or another are performed. The subject matter of the passion play is the trial, condemnation, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, also known at The Passion of Christ.

To perform the Passion of Christ, you will need biblical costumes to represent all of the individuals involved.  This should be your casting list when preparing for your dramatic recreation:

  • Jesus
  • Mary
  • Mary Magdalene
  • Pontius Pilate
  • The Apostles
  • Roman Soldiers (Centurions)
  • Simon of Cyrene
  • Miscellaneous bystanders and witnesses

Biblical costumes that represent shepherds are more than satisfactory to use for any character in the bible as all men wore similar robes and garments.  Mary, the mother of Jesus is usually depicted in blue to that she stands out from the others. The Jesus costume is also a stand-out among the other men’s bible costumes because it includes a crown of thorns and a more colorful shawl or robe; usually red.

Roman soldier costumes are authentic, yet made from lightweight materials. Vinyl and plastic replace leather and metal armor but the look remains true to a biblical Centurion.

Your church’s Passion Play will be one to remember and it will bring your congregation together beyond the Easter Sunday church service. Celebrate the true meaning of Easter. Reflect on Jesus’ suffering and sacrifice. Let it give you strength, not only during the Lenten season but every day.
