A mascot refers to any person, animal, object, or thought that represents a group with a common public identity, such as a school, athletic team, society, military branch or unit, and brand name. Mascots are also employed when marketing consumer products, such as the talking rabbit used in General Mills advertisements to promote a breakfast cereal called Trix. In the sports arena, marketers will use the team's mascot to promote merchandise. Costumed and real-life mascots may enliven fans by promoting a sense of association. These public figure icons may garner attention from the media, which may solidify the mascot's active role for years to come.
