How to Create a Halloween Costume

Costume Discounters

Halloween is one of the few times of the year where adults and kids can dress up in all kinds of different costumes, from superheroes to movie stars. Costume stores sell adult costumes ,boys halloween costumes, and girls Halloween costumes, and most are pre-done and come with all of the accessories needed to complete the look. Unfortunately, however, these store bought costumes can be a little bit pricey, and if you’re trying to dress up the entire family it can get quite expensive. There are ways to make an inexpensive Halloween costume without having to spend a ton of money.

First, come up with the character you want to dress up as. Think of all of the different aspects of their personality and what they wear or look like. Super heroes can be done quite easily with drugstore pantyhose, a piece of fabric for a cape, and a hand painted t-shirt. Ghosts are simple as well. The old sheet with holes cut out can be upgraded by cutting the bottom of the sheet and making it look more ragged, then adding some chains for a creepy effect. For women or girls, princess costumes are quite easy. Find a cute, pink vintage dress that is long, and add some costume jewelry. Pull the hair back and add some blush and lipstick, and you have a beautiful princess costume that is easy to put together and won’t cost a fortune.

For the men, pirates are a popular choice. Eye patches and hats can be found at many retail stores and usually don’t cost a whole lot. Use some old pants and tuck them into a pair of black boots, then finish the look with a white long sleeved shirt and a vest. Most of these items can be found at thrift stores or dollar stores. The disco era is a great sexy costume that both men and women can share, and both can dress up together in the same style. Find some bellbottoms or an old disco dress, puff the hair up in an afro-like style, and finish it off with some funky jewelry and sunglasses. Look for platform shoes, and an awesome disco look is put together for next to nothing.

Unusual and unique costume ideas are easy to find. Look at old magazines, get online and see what others have come up with, or just write down a list of things your family is into, and try to find a common theme. Ninjas are an easy costume as well. Black clothing and a black head covering work great, along with some easy to find accessories like a “fake” ninja star, swords and other tools of the trade. Think about popular celebrities that are easy to dress up as like Elvis or Marilyn Monroe. Then, go through some photographs of them to find costume ideas. No matter what theme or style you choose, it is easy to find everything needed to make an unforgettable Halloween costume that won’t cost a fortune and will be something everyone remembers for years to come.
