Mimes: The Wonderful World of Silent Artists

Miming has been a form of artistic expression since ancient Greek times when it was performed in front of thousands of spectators in the Theater of Dionysus. During this time, performers in masks would act out various scenes without the use of words. This was the genesis of our current mimes.

The definition of a mime is representing an action by acting it out without using words. Miming can be done in several ways. Clowns often use miming to portray an action. Also, performers without any special costumes use pantomime to show an action. However, when we think of mimes, we think of white faced performers who perform acts such as walking against the wind and getting out of a box.

There have been many famous mime artists who have performed the art of miming. Some of the most famous are Robert Shields (from the 1980’s TV show Shields and Yarnell), Mummenschanz, Joseph Grimaldi, Red Skelton and the most famous mime of all time – Marcel Marceau

Mimes have a special gift to portray a scene or situation to an audience, both large and small, without the use of sounds or spoken word. In order to do this, mimes must have the ability to set the scene and convince an audience that they are at that scene. To become a mime artist, potential mimes must have certain skill such as being artistic and also have the ability to tell a story – without using words.

There are many ways that performers interested in becoming mimes. Performers can watch other mime artists and emulate them. Many times mimes will take budding mimes under their wings and offer them career guidance. Others can learn their craft by performing on street corners and at fairs. These mime artist are basically gaining on the job training. Still others can learn the profession by going to mime schools. They are taught the basics of the craft and find better ways to become a mime artist. Any way a performer chooses, the best methods involve on the job training, where potential mime artists can perfect their craft.

Mimes can wear any type of outfit and would be OK. Mimes wear simple shirts and pants to elaborate costumes. Regardless of the clothing, one of the most important part of a mime artist is the makeup. Generally, white face mimes, use white makeup, with accents in other colors, most commonly red and black. Mimes can use the other colors to portray happiness, sadness and other emotions.

Miming has been a performance art for thousands of years, and has been enjoyed by generations. Whether performing on a street corner, in a carnival, or in a theatrical show, mimes will be a part of our lives.
