This week’s Friday Fight features two giants, both literally and figuratively, of the entertainment industry: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. These two square off as Costume Discounters‘ way of celebrating the release of the new movie Hercules, in which the title character is played by Johnson, but has previously been represented by Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger was, for an extenstive period of time, viewed by Americans as the definitive action hero. Whenever a movie needed someone to blow up a car, rescue a damsel or beat up some bad guys, the 38th Governor of California was the star. He brought life to Conan the Barbarian, and made movie-goers incessently say things like “I’ll be back” or “Hasta la vista, baby,” all while mimicking Schwarzenegger’s thick Austrian accent. In spite of goofy characters in box-office duds, like Howard Langston (Jingle All the Way, 1996), or his interpretation of Mr. Freeze (Batman and Robin, 1997), his first-ever starring role was that of Hercules (Hercules in New York, 1970), and that’s where we meet his competition.
Johnson, more commonly known as “The Rock,” has presumably taken the torch from Schwarzenegger as Hollywood’s go-to guy. While he’s had quirky flops to match those of Schwarzenegger (The Tooth Fairy, 2010), he’s more than compensated, by reprising his role as Officer Luke Hobbs in three of the seven Fast and the Furious films, among other action-packed features. Far more impressive than his acting career, though, is his… Well, other acting career. Johnson’s fortune was first found in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where he won ten World Heavyweight Championships and gave millions (and millions) of pre-teens catch phrases that would be sure to get them in trouble with their parents and teachers.
So, Internet… Who lays the smack down this week? Is it “The Governator” or is it “The Great One?”
