What Is Cosplay?

“Oh, isn’t it that thing where you dress up as Star Trek characters?”

Cosplay has a bad rap, but it really isn’t warranted. Short for “costume play,” it’s dressing up as a character with the intent of being as authentic as possible. Any Halloween costume of a superhero, villain, and quirky side character is a cosplay.

You can make it as simple as throwing on a gi and shooting out hadoukens as Ryu, or as complicated as building an eight-foot tall Transformer and stomping around New York City in it. Cosplay is about creativity, fun, and love for the character. What’s most important is that you enjoy what you’re doing.

These are some tips to make sure stupid little things don’t bring you down.
