For a minute, a story focused on a battle between cowboys and aliens seems too outlandish even for the fairytale world of Hollywood. But when you think about it, doesn’t any story about an alien invasion seem farfetched to most of us?
The story behind “Cowboys & Aliens” straddles the line between history and fantasy. When giving the trailer a first glance, you might mistake it for something you would see in the late night lineup on SyFy Channel. But the cast and director might suggest otherwise, with “Ironman” director Jon Favreau running the show starring Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell.
So will “Cowboys & Aliens” be more of a guys-night, special effect-laden action flick, or is there something to the story? Or will it be more of a classic Western, only with aliens? For now, we can only speculate. If you’re looking to get a feel for what to expect, check out Scott Mitchell Rosenberg’s graphic novel, on which the movie is based.
One thing’s for sure, if “Cowboys & Aliens” experiences commercial and critical success, the Western – or films that use elements of that style of filmmaking – is officially back. Given the reception for the remake of “True Grit” in late 2010, the genre could be in for a resurgence.
With the mainstream popularity of country music surging over the last decade as well, cowboy-inspired attire continues to move even farther into everyday wear, as well as costumes. If you’re planning on drawing on the Western influence for Halloween or a Western-themed party, what’s your plan for your costume?
