So you thought the saga had come to an end?
It sure seemed that way back in 2005, after the release of Revenge of the Sith, the final installment of the prequel trilogy, had culminated with Anakin Skywalker’s final foray to the Dark Side, as he transformed into Darth Vader.
The backstory behind George Lucas’ epic Star Wars tales had been told — albeit along with some of its lesser moments (ahem, Jar Jar Binks) — So what else was there to tell?
In just six months, your inner geek will awaken, along with The Force, with the long-anticipated release of the first of three new installments in the saga.. If you’re keeping track at home, this is the beginning of the THIRD Star Wars trilogy.
Directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and written by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back), The Force Awakens takes place some-30 years after the Battle of Endor and the events portrayed in Return of the Jedi (You know – The one with the Ewoks). Which, makes sense, considering Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from Lucas’ original trilogy will all be returning in the franchise’s newest venture — Though, they don’t quite look the same as they did back in 1977.
After the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of Lucasfilm late in 2012 (for a whopping $4.05 BILLION), The Force Awakens was announced as the first film in this next trilogy. Of course, George Lucas was still involved as creative consultant, and John Williams returned to compose the score. In addition to the big names behind the scenes, Ford, Fisher and Hamill will reunite with Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) Kenny Baker (R2-D2), and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), who are all scheduled to appear in Episode VII — We just don’t yet know how large their roles are actually going to be.
So now, we’re just six months away from the film’s highly-anticipated release (Dec. 18, 2015) a full decade after the premiere of the most recent live-action Star Wars film. Star Wars aficionados are foaming at the mouth, wondering exactly what new galactic adventures will be in store for them this December.
What we do know so far is that new characters include John Boyega, who plays Finn, a Stormtrooper, Oscar Isaac in the role of pilot Poe Dameron, and Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, and will seemingly break the franchise’s reputation for being a bit lax with its female roles.
Best of all, it has been confirmed that there will be a brand new villain. While Darth Vader will always be considered one of the baddest badasses of all time when it comes to cinematic villainy, it remains to be seen exactly how this mysterious new antagonist—Kylo Ren—will live up to Vader’s legacy. All we know so far? His lightsaber sports a pretty sick laser crossguard along the handle.
Though further details are being kept tightly under wraps, as only a multi-billion dollar corporation can do, rumors abound that the film will feature Rey, who hails from planet Jakku, as the young, female protagonist, as the plot will unfold after the discovery of Luke’s hand and a lightsaber. She’s said to be a solitary scavenger who lives in a ship graveyard before her adventures begin… Which may or may not include an epic journey with Finn and Han Solo (and Chewbacca, of course) in the search for the one-and-only Luke Skywalker.
Only six months’ time will tell, but really, who would want spoilers for this anyway? Let the countdown begin!
